CUSTOMER CHALLENGE

A global force in the rail industry with a particular expertise in the field of train coupling systems wanted to partner with a pneumatics company offering rail sector experience, in-depth knowledge of safety critical areas, solutions able to cope with the extreme conditions associated with rail applications, and that had a truly global presence.

There are two couplers per carriage, one at the front and one at the back, which are used to connect the train configuration and carry power from the engine to the vital carriage systems.  The amount of couplers overall on the train depends on the configuration of the vehicles and the type of route or number of passengers that need to be carried.

NORGREN SOLUTION

Norgren proved to be the ideal partner based on its 30 years of experience in the industry worldwide. Norgren engineers fully recognised and understood the customer requirements and focused on delivering a solution that provided real Engineering Advantage.

Norgren's solution involved a number of different components from its rail portfolio of products. Engineers provided a manifold-based solution that met the specification, provided the required functionality, reduced the installation costs/times, and minimised the number of components purchased. The final solution combined a manifold, valves, flow controls, pressure switches and filters in one unit. The customer received a single system that replaced 22 individual products, thus reducing purchasing complexity and time.

Products selected for this application have been qualified for -40°C temperature operation, giving the customer confidence that the system would operate reliably in extreme environments. Another critical requirement was its desire to work with suppliers who have both global and local presence. With its wide network of global facilities, Norgren offered the support that the customer needed.
