CUSTOMERAPPLICATION

The customer is a manufacturer of passenger rail transport, and wanted to use pneumatics to power an improved door step actuation system for use on its carriages.

BUSINESSCHALLENGE

The customer required a compact and effective pneumatic powered door step actuation system. This needed to be simple and robust, together with being safe to use by the general public. It also need to fit in the compact space envelope underneath the door step of the carriage and could not protrude outside the existing area of the train so that air resistance was not increased when the train was moving.

NORGRENSOLUTION

To meet the customer’s needs, Norgren’s engineers used a standard cylinder which was customised to enable it to be adapted to the task in hand. Two solutions were devised; a sliding mechanism and a swinging mechanism, both of which worked successfully.
